danger of dependence of the narcotic analgesics commonly used.
Morphine is not frequently found in the street drug culture.
Mostly because it is available in hospitals, there have been
a number of documented cases of morphine dependence among
health care professionals.
Heroin is
processed from Morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted
from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant. Heroin is the most
abused and the most rapidly acting opiate.
PCP is a
white crystalline powder that dissolves easily in water or
alcohol. The drug has a unique bitter chemical taste. PCP
can be mixed with dyes and is sold on the illicit drug market
in tablet, capsule, and colored powder form.
Methylphenidate,
sold under the brand name Ritalin, is a mild central nervous
system stimulant that is administered to children and adults
who exhibit symptoms associated with attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD). Although Ritalin is not an illegal drug,
it is often illegally shared (sold or bartered) and abused
by college students, particularly during exam times.
